More than 65% of Malaysian degree holders earn less than RM3,000 monthly, raising serious concerns about the economic value of higher education, according to a study titled The ‘Gaji Cukup Makan’ Economy.

The report highlights that over 70% of graduates are in semi-skilled or unskilled roles, revealing a major mismatch between qualifications and job markets.

Study author Dr Mohd Yusof Saari warns this disconnect is creating structural economic risks, reducing social mobility and discouraging education among lower-income groups. He calls for urgent reforms in wage guidelines, industry training, job design, and outcome-based graduate tracking to tackle the crisis effectively.
