No Speed Limiter, No Road Access: New Rules for Commercial Vehicles

Starting October 1, commercial vehicles without a Speed Limitation Device (SLD) will fail inspection and be barred from the roads, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The SLD, which electronically limits vehicle speed via the ECU, aims to reduce accidents involving heavy vehicles.

Enforcement will occur in three phases, covering vehicles made after 2015, those built before 2015, and finally, retrofit installations by July 2026.

The measure applies to commercial vehicles over 3,500kg or those carrying more than eight passengers. Loke emphasized safety over business costs, adding that complementary safety tech like AEB and black boxes is also under review.
