New: Rais Yatim Pleads Not Guilty to Sedition Charge

AYER KEROH, Sept 21, 2026, Former Dewan Negara president and current Wawasan chairman Rais Yatim pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court today to a sedition charge linked to remarks made in June.

The 84-year-old was accused of uttering seditious words during an event at Parkroyal A’Famosa Melaka Resort on June 5, where he prayed for Tunku Nadzaruddin to be installed as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. Prosecutors argued the statement implied disloyalty to the reigning monarch.

Sedition charges

The charge was filed under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment or a fine of RM5,000. Deputy public prosecutors sought bail of RM10,000, while Rais’ legal team, including his son Danni, requested a reduction citing his cooperation.

Judge Raja Noor Adilla Raja Mahyaldin set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and fixed Oct. 27 for mention.
