Special flight departs to evacuate Malaysians from Bangladesh

SEPANG: A special flight, an AirAsia flight using an Airbus A330, under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s directive to bring back Malaysians in strife-torn Bangladesh, departed from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 at 7.30 am today. The AirAsia wide-body aircraft is capable of accommodating 350 passengers, is expected to arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 9.20 am (local time).

The evacuation is expected to take less than 12 hours. Bangladesh is calm amid a curfew and telecom disruptions after the Supreme Court scrapped job quotas, prompting protesters to issue new demands. Clashes killed 147 people following the court’s decision to reinstate job reservations. The court now mandates 93% of government jobs be based on merit, replacing previous quotas.
