New: Don’t define stability in Malaysia through Malay-Muslim only

PETALING JAYA, Aug 31, 2026 – Former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak has urged national leaders to avoid defining Malaysia’s political stability solely through the lens of Malay and Muslim unity, stressing that Sabah and Sarawak’s distinct realities must be respected.

Responding to Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki’s remarks on Muslim unity as the core of stability, Salleh said such sentiments may reflect Peninsular Malaysia’s context but cannot be the sole framework for the nation.

“When we speak about political stability at the national level, we must also recognise the distinct history, social composition, and political realities of Sabah and Sarawak,” he wrote.

Salleh emphasised that East Malaysia’s traditions of inclusiveness, mutual respect, and accommodation among diverse ethnic and religious groups are fundamental. He called for greater appreciation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), reminding Malaysians that Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaya and Singapore to form the federation.

He warned that long-term stability must be inclusive, uphold federalism, and respect the aspirations of East Malaysians. “Malaysia will be strong when the spirit of partnership upon which it was formed continues to be honoured,” Salleh said, adding that every region must feel equally invested in the shared future.
