KUALA LUMPUR: The Urban Renewal Act (URA) has sparked rare unity between opposition MPs, government backbenchers and four Perikatan Nasional-led states. Protesters outside Parliament on Tuesday chanted “Reject URA” and waved “Kill the Bill” placards, warning it threatens state powers, bumiputra land rights and urban communities. Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis declared outright rejection, citing the Town and Country Planning Act 1976 as already sufficient. Opposition chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan vowed bloc voting against the Bill, while critics blasted the government for poor consultation. Deputy Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu later received protest memoranda from civil groups.
