Telcos Deny Sharing Personal User Data, Assure Full Compliance with Privacy Laws

1 min read

SHAH ALAM – Four major Malaysian telcos — Telekom Malaysia (TM), U Mobile, CelcomDigi, and Maxis — have clarified that the data submitted to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was anonymised and did not include any personally identifiable information (PII).

In separate press statements on Sunday, the companies stressed that strict data governance and security protocols were followed, in line with existing laws and regulations.

Personal User Data

TM reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding customer data with integrity, while U Mobile stated that shared data was aggregated and fully anonymised. CelcomDigi emphasised compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and oversight by its Data Protection Officer. Maxis said it prohibits any access or processing of identifiable data.

This clarification follows reports alleging the government directed telcos to submit detailed phone and internet records — claims denied by MCMC, which stated the data was purely statistical.
