A 63-year-old housewife in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, has lost RM87,975.04 to a bogus stock investment scheme she came across on Facebook, police said.
Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the woman, from Wakaf Tembusu, saw the advertisement on Oct 3 and contacted a male suspect via WhatsApp.
The suspect persuaded her to join the scheme by promising returns of RM25,000 for every RM450 invested.
Savings and Pawned Jewellery Lost
Between Oct 3 and 12, the victim made nine payments using her savings and money she raised by pawning her jewellery.
She realised she had been cheated when she could not recover her initial investment or receive any of the promised profits, and her attempts to contact the suspect failed. She lodged a police report at 7.58pm on Sunday (Oct 18).
Offers promising unusually high returns from small investments are a common sign of investment scams, and the public is advised to check with the authorities before transferring money.
