Tottenham beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (Oct 31) after Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off in the 13th minute, leaving the 10-man visitors in the Premier League relegation zone, Sky Sports reported.

Archie Gray headed Roberto De Zerbi’s side in front in the 25th minute and Jan Paul van Hecke added the second in the 73rd minute, both goals coming from corners.

Mateta red card changes the game

Referee Michael Oliver first showed Mateta a yellow card for a late tackle on Micky van de Ven, but changed it to red after a VAR review at the pitchside monitor, according to Sky Sports. The striker now misses Palace’s next three league matches, against Liverpool, Coventry City and Hull City.

Gray, who was booked in the 16th minute, met a Mohammed Kudus corner from close range to break the deadlock, VAVEL reported. Van Hecke then rose to head in from another corner midway through the second half.

How Tottenham beat Crystal Palace

Spurs dominated after the dismissal. Sky Sports said they had 34 shots, their highest total in a Premier League match since February 2016, and 79.4 per cent of possession, citing Opta data. Palace’s 20.6 per cent share was their lowest ever in the competition.

The win was Tottenham’s third league victory in a row and lifted them to eighth place in the table, Sky Sports reported.

Palace drop into relegation zone

Pierre Sage’s Palace slipped to third from bottom after a third straight league defeat, following a 5-0 loss at Brighton and a 2-0 home defeat by Newcastle. Sky Sports said it was the first time since March 2023 that Palace had lost three league games in a row without scoring.

Sky Sports News reporter Chris Reidy said pressure on Sage was continuing to grow, adding that chairman Steve Parish and the club’s hierarchy were weighing his future. Palace’s away fans chanted the manager’s name during the match.

Palace host Liverpool in their next league match on Sunday (Nov 8).
