Chelsea beat 10-man Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (Oct 31), with goals from Morgan Rogers and a Cole Palmer penalty stretching the Manchester United winless run to nine matches in all competitions, 101 Great Goals reported. Sky Sports also listed the 2-0 scoreline, with Rogers scoring in the 50th minute and Palmer from the spot in the 64th.
The early Premier League kick-off left Michael Carrick’s side with no points from the trip to London, while Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea returned to winning ways.
Martinez red card swings the game
The first half ended goalless after both sides had goals ruled out for offside. Estevao, making his first Premier League start of the season, had an early effort chalked off, and Matheus Cunha’s strike for United was disallowed after a VAR check in the 34th minute.
Rogers broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart, finishing after a pass from Romeo Lavia. United defender Lisandro Martinez was booked in the 59th minute for repeatedly pulling back Rogers, and shortly afterwards he challenged Wesley Fofana inside the box.
Play was initially allowed to continue, but referee Peter Bankes went to the pitchside monitor following a VAR review, awarded the penalty and showed Martinez a second yellow card. Palmer converted the spot kick for his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea, in his 105th appearance, according to 101 Great Goals.
Manchester United winless run reaches nine
The defeat extends United’s run without a win to nine games in all competitions, their worst since the 1988-89 season, the report said. VAVEL noted before the match that United had not won an away game in any competition this season.
Carrick sent on Mason Mount and Ayden Heaven as United chased the game. Going into the weekend, United were 16th on seven points from eight matches, one point ahead of 19th-placed Coventry, according to the pre-match standings.
Chelsea bounce back from two defeats
Chelsea came into the match after back-to-back losses to Tottenham and Liverpool, NBC Sports reported. The win lifts them to 16 points, having started the day fifth on 13.
The hosts had 58 per cent of possession and 18 shots to United’s 12, with nine on target, the match statistics showed. United committed 19 fouls and collected four yellow cards as well as the red.
Later on Saturday’s Premier League programme, Manchester City host Brighton, Tottenham face Crystal Palace and Aston Villa meet Fulham.
