Atletico Madrid Beat Levante 2-0 to Go Top of La Liga

Atletico Madrid moved to the top of La Liga after they won 2-0 at Levante on Saturday (Oct 31), with Alex Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone scoring at the Ciutat de Valencia.

The result was Atletico’s seventh consecutive La Liga win, beIN Sports reported, their best league run since January 2025, when they won eight in a row.

According to Futbol Centroamerica, Atletico have 28 points from 11 matches, one more than Barcelona, who have played a game fewer and were due to host Alaves later on Saturday. Levante sit 16th with 10 points.

Grimaldo and Simeone Score for Atletico Madrid

Levante had the first clear opening, with Dani Requena forcing a save from Jan Oblak in the 11th minute.

Atletico went ahead in the 36th minute. Levante’s Jon Ander Olasagasti failed to clear a pass from Alex Baena, and Grimaldo pounced to fire past goalkeeper Ryan at his near post.

Simeone doubled the lead in the second half, holding off a challenge from Nacho Perez before slotting past Ryan. Futbol Centroamerica credited Baena with the assist.

Grimaldo now has four goals and two assists in La Liga this season, according to beIN Sports.

VAR Rules Out Two Atletico Goals

The margin could have been wider. Morten Hjulmand had the ball in the net in the 16th minute, but his effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. David Hancko also had a goal disallowed for offside in the 54th minute.

Levante still created chances. Figures cited by beIN Sports showed the hosts had 20 attempts and an expected goals (xG) total of 1.25, compared with 11 shots and 0.58 xG for Atletico.

Simeone Equals Aragones Record

The victory was coach Diego Simeone’s 344th in La Liga, coming in his 565th match, beIN Sports reported.

That total equals Luis Aragones’ record for the most wins in La Liga history. Aragones reached 344 victories over 756 matches.

Atletico started with Julian Alvarez and Lee Kang-in in attack, according to Futbol Centroamerica, while Levante coach Luis Castro used a 4-3-3 formation. Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea refereed the match.
