Trump Demands Fed Cuts as Inflation Persists

1 min read

President Donald Trump is pressuring new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh to slash interest rates, but Wall Street investors and Fed officials are leaning toward hikes as inflation persists.

Warsh, who assumed leadership in May, may hold off on immediate increases at the upcoming meeting, yet economists warn the Fed cannot delay much longer if price pressures remain.

Trump’s Iran Conflict Fuels Energy Costs and Inflation Risks

Factors such as the Iran conflict driving up energy costs, new global tariffs, heavy investment in data centers, and resilient consumer spending are fueling inflationary concerns. The consumer price index recently posted its largest annual rise since 2023, keeping inflation above the Fed’s 2% target.

Trump insists rates should be lowered, blaming political board members for resistance, while allies like Kevin Hassett call hikes a “mistake.”

Yet economists argue waiting could embed inflation, forcing sharper increases later.

The Fed faces a dilemma: raising rates risks political fallout ahead of midterms, but holding steady could push long‑term borrowing costs higher.

Analysts say energy prices and wage growth will determine the path, but forecasts suggest rate hikes are more likely than cuts in 2026, dimming Trump’s hopes for cheaper borrowing.
