Former prime minister Najib Razak’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, has failed in her application to review the Federal Court’s decision rejecting her appeal to disqualify Justice Zaini Mazlan from presiding over her corruption trial. Zaini had convicted her in 2022 on three charges linked to the RM1.25 billion Sarawak hybrid solar project.
Rosmah Mansor Fails Federal Court Review Bid
A three‑judge panel led by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Azizah Nawawi ruled that the earlier Federal Court panel was not biased. Rosmah’s lawyer argued there was a quorum failure since two judges had previously heard her pre‑trial applications, but the panel dismissed this, stating prior involvement did not amount to actual bias.
Rosmah had sought Zaini’s recusal in August 2022 after a leaked High Court research unit document, claiming it showed prejudice. Zaini rejected the request, clarifying the draft was not relied upon, and later convicted her, sentencing her to 10 years’ jail and a RM970 million fine.
The Federal Court found her review bid did not meet the threshold under Rule 137. Her main appeal against conviction and sentence will be heard by the Court of Appeal on September 1, keeping her legal battle in the spotlight.
