President Donald Trump has suggested he may consider declaring a national security emergency to push through new voting restrictions, telling Real America’s Voice that “stranger things have happened.”
The idea was floated by host Wayne Allyn Root, who urged Trump to act if the Senate fails to pass the SAVE America Act, legislation requiring proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote.
SAVE America Act Stalls in Senate Despite Trump Pressure
The bill, Trump’s top legislative priority, has stalled in the Senate, with lawmakers leaving for recess without advancing it.
Trump has already issued executive orders aimed at exerting federal control over voter rolls and mail‑in ballots, directing the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Postal Service to enforce stricter measures.
Those orders were blocked in June by a federal judge, and the administration has appealed to the Supreme Court.
Critics, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, warn Trump’s efforts amount to a federal takeover of elections, which are traditionally managed by states.
Democrats and voting rights groups argue the SAVE America Act would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, while Trump continues to make unfounded claims of widespread fraud.
The debate underscores escalating tensions ahead of the 2026 midterms, where control of Congress is at stake.
