Umno is facing another split in the wake of the party leader’s call to quit the Perikatan Nasional coalition.
News reports today say Umno is deciding tonight whether to stick to PN or to abandon ship.
However, a report from Singapore’s Strait Times says senior Umno lawmakers are issuing warnings against Zahid’s plan to drop PM TS Muhyiddin Yassin.
Umno’s leadership seems unhappy the parliament will have a five-day sitting beginning July 26. The session, dubbed ‘hearing’ sessions by opponents of the regime, ends on Aug 2.
The reopening of the parliament is supposed to defuse tension in the ruling coalition.
The session will approve amendments to allow for future hybrid ‘sittings.’ There will be no debate on the emergency proclamations.
CHEATING
While Anwar Ibrahim says the government is ‘cheating’ with the sessions for not allowing debates, Umno is divided.
At least three long-serving Umno Members of Parliament have warned that the withdrawal from PN is contrary to a party resolution. They say it may have legal ramifications.
Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa is leading the case for Umno to remain in PN.
But those allied to the leader, Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Ex-PM Dato’ Sri Najib Razak want Umno out.
They believe Umno has enough MPs to form a government and push any election date far in the future.
A report in Utusan says Umno is deciding tonight whether it remains in power or pulls the plug on Muhyiddin.
A credible source told Utusan Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid will hold a meeting with UMNO MPs tonight.
However, Utusan says Zahid’s attempt to pull Umno out of PN will not happen.
The paper says this is because Zahid’s plan is vague due to factors beyond his control.
