MELAKA, July 19, 2026 – The Melaka Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) confirmed that no one was trapped in the collapse of a two‑storey shophouse under renovation at Taman Kota Laksamana yesterday.

Director Mohd Zaidi Ma’at said inspections and search operations, conducted with police, the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) and the building owner, found that four workers — three Bangladeshi men and a Rohingya man — escaped unharmed.

The collapse, which damaged a Toyota Vios and Proton Iriz parked nearby, was declared safe after JBPM ended its operation at 11.18pm. MBMB has since issued a public notice prohibiting entry to the site due to risks of further collapse and falling debris.

The shophouse first collapsed at 4.45pm, followed by a larger collapse at 5.23pm
