BUTTERWORTH — Blindly trusting technology took a hilariously literal turn in Penang when a tour bus carrying over 30 passengers from Johor ended up wedged like a sardine under a low-clearance flyover in Taman Bagan.
The driver, Razali, admitted he relied completely on the Waze navigation app while heading to a nearby hotel before continuing to Kedah. Unfortunately for the tour group, Waze forgot to mention that their double-decker ambition wouldn’t fit through a 2.6-metre archway.
Waze playing funny games
Nearly half the bus squeezed under the structure with a loud crunch, shattering windows and giving the vehicle an impromptu convertible roof. Two passengers suffered minor scrapes from flying glass, though everyone escaped mostly unhurt—if thoroughly embarrassed.
Despite height warning signs posted before the bridge, Razali blamed poor lighting and blind faith in his GPS. It turns out Waze provides great directions, provided you do not mind leaving your bus roof behind.
