KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28, 2026 – A social media post by Threader GourmetGuy (@gourmetttguy) listing 10 wealthy Malaysian entrepreneurs of Chinese descent has ignited heated debate, with critics accusing the poster of “painting a false picture” of racial economic dominance.
The post, which claimed “Just look at the race that dominates the economy of Malaysia,” urged Malay leaders to unite against what he described as “single race dominance.” Supporters echoed the sentiment, with one insisting, “99% of People in Teluk Intan will definitely accord their strong support.”
Chinese businessmen
But many Malaysians pushed back, pointing out that the highlighted wealth came from legitimate businesses, not “sakau” or plundered riches. Others argued that Malay billionaires remain hidden because ministers and their families refuse to disclose their assets. “The list exists only because Chinese entrepreneurs declared their wealth,” one commenter noted.
Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was cited as an example, with critics pointing to his children’s success as proof that wealth is not confined to one community. Others named Malay tycoons such as Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary and the late Tun Daim Zainuddin.
One frustrated netizen summed up the backlash: “Some people learn to become millionaires; others only know how to be jealous.”
