PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has commuted the death sentence of a former sawmill worker, Mohammad Awari Ahmad, to 40 years in prison for killing and raping a nurse nine years ago. The judge also ordered Mohammad Awari, 31, to be given 12 strokes of the cane, and for his prison term to commence from the date of his arrest on March 1, 2015.

The man had slashed the victim’s neck, which her five-year-old son witnessed. The victim was also robbed and violently raped. Mohammad Awari was initially found guilty and sentenced to death by the Kota Bharu High Court in Kelantan on Jan 31, 2018, for killing the 25-year-old wife of an auxiliary policeman.
