KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7, 2026 – The High Court heard today that the Auditor General was barred from examining Najib Razak’s bank accounts during its audit of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Former Public Accounts Committee member Tony Pua testified that the restriction, coupled with 1MDB’s failure to provide key documents, severely limited the audit’s scope.

Pua said the Auditor General had to rely solely on 1MDB’s audited financial statements and supporting documents from external auditors, as investment agreements and overseas subsidiaries’ bank statements were withheld. He noted that no investigations or questions were permitted on Najib’s accounts.
The court also allowed Najib’s lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, to expunge parts of Pua’s witness statement deemed hearsay, including references to media reports and claims about the removal of former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail. The hearing continues in 1MDB’s US$5.64 billion civil suit against Najib and seven others.
