Ban on Shamsiah Fakeh Memoir Sparks Backlash

1 min read

PETALING JAYA – The Home Ministry’s decision to ban Memoir Shamsiah Fakeh has drawn criticism from leaders, including Selangor exco Jamaliah Jamaluddin, granddaughter of Shamsiah. She argued the book, published since 2004, has never posed security risks, serving instead as a personal account of Shamsiah’s life.

Shamsiah Fakeh was a prominent nationalist and leader in the leftist movement during Malaya’s independence struggle, later associated with the Communist Party of Malaya. Jamaliah warned the ban could stifle intellectual discourse and narrow Malaysia’s knowledge culture. She added that suppressing such works risks fueling more extreme sentiments rather than encouraging open dialogue.
