BANGKOK, Feb 21 — At least 72 tigers have died in recent weeks at Tiger Kingdom, a private animal park in northern Thailand, after testing confirmed the presence of canine distemper virus and respiratory bacteria, authorities said. The Chiang Mai provincial livestock office noted the difficulty of detecting illness in tigers until it was too late. The park, which promotes close tourist interaction with big cats, could not be reached for comment. Animal rights group PETA Asia told AFP that the deaths highlight the misery of captive tigers and urged tourists to avoid such attractions.
72 Tigers Died
Thailand is home to around 1,500 wild Indochinese tigers, mostly in protected reserves. However, hundreds live in captivity at tourist parks, raising concerns about welfare and disease management.
