KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Amid growing calls within DAP for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to accelerate promised reforms, party leader Syahredzan Johan has cautioned against rushing sensitive changes. Speaking on KiniTV, the Bangi MP acknowledged that reform efforts have been slow but stressed that Anwar, who also chairs Pakatan Harapan, faces a difficult balancing act.
Syahredzan pointed to demands for full recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) as an example of the challenges. While progress has been made, he said many supporters remain dissatisfied, yet the issue is highly sensitive among Malay communities.
rush reforms
“We cannot be hasty. Reform must be gradual and careful,” he said, recalling Anwar’s own warning about Egypt’s Arab Spring, where rapid changes led to military intervention. His remarks came after DAP delegate Sangeet Kaur Deo urged the party to reconsider ties with Anwar, accusing him of dividing coalition partners while empowering Umno. Syahredzan disagreed, stressing that reforms must weigh diverse interests.
He also rejected criticism that DAP leaders were clinging to power after delegates voted to remain in the Madani government, insisting the party’s priority is stability and measured progress.
