Electric Vehicle (EV) owners should strictly follow the manufacturer’s manual to ensure safe operation and minimise fire risks, said Putrajaya Fire and Rescue Department fire safety director Datuk Khirudin Drahman Hussain.

He advised against overcharging, monitoring charging sessions, and avoiding extreme heat or debris. EV fires, driven by ‘thermal runaway,’ are difficult to extinguish with regular methods, requiring special tools. Only four EV fires occurred in Malaysia this year, often due to battery thermal runaway. Firefighters need extra training and equipment due to toxic gas emissions from EV batteries.
