A CSA Culture? Government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil has hit back at PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man over his criticism of the confidence and supply agreement (CSA) signed with seven opposition MPs, reminding him that he was a minister when a similar deal was struck in 2021, Free Malaysia Today reported.
Tuan Ibrahim had said the CSA should not become a new political culture, as it appeared to undermine the people’s mandate.
Confidence and supply agreement row
Speaking to reporters on Sunday (Nov 1) after an internet safety programme at the Multimedia University (MMU) Melaka campus in Bukit Beruang, Fahmi questioned the PAS leader’s stand.
“The Cabinet he sat in started that culture,” said Fahmi, who is also the communications minister.
He said the agreement did not break any law and asked why anyone would object if something good could come out of it. Fahmi added that the door remained open for other MPs who have not signed the CSA to do so, and the government would not stop them.
What the CSA signatories get
Six Bersatu MPs and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman signed the CSA with the government on Thursday (Oct 29), according to FMT.
Under its terms, the government will table constitutional amendments on term limits for the prime minister and on separating the roles of the attorney-general and the public prosecutor.
The MPs who signed are to receive constituency allocations once the 2027 Budget is passed.
The 2021 precedent CSA culture
The 2021 arrangement Fahmi referred to is believed to be the memorandum of understanding on transformation and political stability, signed in September that year between the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration and the then-opposition Pakatan Harapan, FMT reported.
PAS was part of that government, and Tuan Ibrahim served as environment and water minister.
Separately, FMT reported on Sunday that DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said the party supports the CSA, which is open to all opposition MPs. Loke also cited the 2021 memorandum between Pakatan Harapan and Ismail Sabri, but said signing it did not mean the coalition supported Ismail at the time.
