YONG PENG, Oct 5, 2026 – A classmate was the first to discover the body of Irene Sofiya, a Form Four student, after she failed to attend extra classes despite her motorcycle being parked at the school compound.
The friend, identified only as Rina, said she grew uneasy when Irene did not show up and failed to answer three phone calls. Rina then checked Irene’s grandmother’s house but found she had not returned. Concerned, she went back to school with other friends to search.

“I noticed the school hall door was open, which was unusual. When we looked inside, I saw a pair of legs under the stage. We rushed closer and immediately screamed for the security guard and teachers,” Rina told reporters at the victim’s family home.
She described Irene as a bright, gentle student who was well-liked by peers. Irene had planned a staycation with friends in December to celebrate their birthdays, but the plan was cut short after she was found dead, believed to have been murdered at the school yesterday.
The incident has shocked the community, with classmates mourning the loss of a friend remembered for her kindness and quiet nature.
