Google Faces Backlash Now Over Trump’s “Lake America” Rename

WASHINGTON, Sept 2, 2026 – Google has come under fire after updating Google Maps to reflect U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

Trump signed the order last Thursday amid a trade dispute with Canada, sparking criticism across social media. The company defended its move in a blog post, saying the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) had formally changed the name in the United States. As a result, U.S. users will see “Lake America,” Canadians will see “Lake Ontario,” and international users will see both names.

The explanation failed to appease critics. Independent journalist Adam Cochran called the search giant’s stance “genuinely pathetic,” while author Stephen Maher urged Canada to review its business ties with the company. California senator Scott Wiener said Google’s decision was “a horrible choice,” and analyst Drew Savicki mocked the policy, asking if Google would accept “Poopyland” if Trump renamed California.
