SHAH ALAM, Sept 2, 2026 — Preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16) and potential cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) are expected to dominate discussions at PAS’s 2026 Muktamar.
Dr Ariff Aizuddin Azlan, senior political science lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), said the gathering could strengthen ties between PAS and BN, framed around the narrative of Malay unity. “Both parties believe they can win the support of Malay voters,” he is quoted as saying in Sinar.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan confirmed that UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki will attend the Muktamar. Leaders from Perikatan Nasional (PN), NGOs, and foreign guests have also been invited.
PAS-Umno alliance
Meanwhile, Associate Professor Syaza Farhana Mohamad Shukri of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) said PAS must clarify its direction in working with UMNO to appeal to undecided voters. She stressed that PAS should present itself as a “government-in-waiting” with credible policies.
Although cooperation remains uncertain, analysts believe the Muktamar could mark a new chapter in PAS-UMNO relations, potentially reshaping Malaysia’s political landscape ahead of GE16.
