Govt to Discuss Mitigation on Rising Electricity Bills

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 17 — The government will convene a special meeting tomorrow to explore immediate mitigation measures against rising household electricity bills.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the meeting will involve the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), and the Ministry of Finance.

“Sekembali dari India dan Maldives, perhatian saya terus tertumpu kepada keresahan rakyat terkait kenaikan bil elektrik. Perkara ini perlu ditangani segera,” he said in a statement.

Anwar stressed that targeted subsidies remain in place to protect the majority of households, noting that about 80 per cent of domestic users consuming below 600 kilowatt-hours monthly are unaffected. However, haze and hotter weather have driven higher usage among some households, pushing them beyond the threshold and subjecting them to automatic fuel cost adjustments.

He assured that subsidy policies will continue to prioritise fairness and public welfare.
