SINGAPORE, July 25 – A rent dispute turned deadly when Li Ye, 40, stabbed her long‑term boyfriend Lim Lai Guan, 56, at their condominium unit in Citygate Residences, Beach Road. The Straits Times reported that Li was sentenced to 12 years’ jail on July 24 after pleading guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Rent Dispute
The Chinese national attacked Lim during an argument on May 8, 2024, after becoming upset over his failure to contribute to the S$3,200 monthly rent. Lim, who had promised to support Li and her family through forex trading, suffered losses and began borrowing money, leaving Li to cover expenses. Deputy Public Prosecutor Grace Chua described the case as domestic violence, noting Lim was unarmed and tried to move away. Li later apologised to Lim’s family in court. An autopsy revealed the stab wound pierced his aorta, causing his death.
