Japan Tsunami: Thousands in Shelters Overnight Now

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck central Japan, leaving thousands in evacuation centers. At least four people are confirmed dead, dozens injured, and an unknown number are trapped in collapsed buildings. The quake, which struck on New Year’s Day, triggered tsunami warnings, later downgraded.

No Tsunami

About 60 aftershocks followed the initial quake. The full extent of damage, including collapsed houses and power poles, will become clearer on Tuesday. Highways were closed, leaving more than 36,000 households without power. Residents describe a “scary afternoon and evening,” and officials warn of potential avalanches in snowy areas. Malaysians in Japan are marking themselves as safe on Facebook.
