The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting today to determine key dates and preparations for the 16th Melaka state election following the dissolution of the state assembly.
The meeting, chaired by EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun, is scheduled to begin at 10am at a hotel on Jalan Bendahara in Melaka. A press conference will be held immediately after the meeting to announce the decisions.
EC to Announce Key Dates for 16th Melaka State Election Today
Among the matters to be announced are the election writ, nomination day, early voting and polling day, as well as the campaign period and other preparations for the polls.
The Melaka State Legislative Assembly was dissolved effective Sept 23 after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the move on Sept 22, paving the way for the 16th state election.
Under the state constitution, the election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution.
The previous Melaka state election was held on Nov 20, 2021. Barisan Nasional won 21 of the 28 seats contested, while Pakatan Harapan secured five and Perikatan Nasional won two.
The EC will also determine the electoral roll to be used and other logistical arrangements for the election.
