The Ministry of Finance will study a proposal to incorporate selected Goods and Services Tax (GST) features into the existing Sales and Service Tax (SST) framework. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move could make Malaysia’s tax system more progressive and efficient, while SST would remain the basis of the current system.

Anwar said the government was open to adopting GST elements if they could improve the existing tax structure. The proposal comes as the government looks to strengthen its fiscal position while ensuring any changes do not place excessive pressure on households.
The proposal is still at the study stage and no decision has been made to reintroduce GST in its previous form. The government will assess the potential benefits and impact before determining whether any changes should be implemented.
