When my husband sent me his thoughts after an argument, I expected an apology or an explanation. Instead, he sent me a ChatGPT conversation containing a 30-day plan to help him manage his temper.
At first, I was irritated. I worried that he was taking a shortcut rather than doing the harder work of examining his own behaviour. But after reading the conversation, my perspective changed.
ChatGPT Helped My Husband Understand His Triggers and Changed How We Handle Conflict
My husband had told ChatGPT that he sometimes became short-tempered and had identified six situations that triggered him. The AI then explored possible reasons behind his reactions, including how past experiences might have left him more sensitive to situations involving fear, losing control or feeling undervalued.
That last point particularly caught my attention because I realised I had sometimes contributed to making him feel undermined or overlooked.
ChatGPT then offered practical responses for each trigger, including ways to pause, seek clarification and avoid escalating an argument. It eventually created a 30-day “Tone Reset Protocol” covering awareness, replacement behaviours, nervous-system regulation and leadership.
We discussed the suggestions together, and I appreciated that my husband had recognised a problem, reflected on its causes and actively sought help.
I still have reservations about relying on AI for deeply personal matters. But if using ChatGPT encourages someone to reflect, communicate better and strengthen their relationship, perhaps the starting point matters less than what they do with it.
