New: Fed-up parents disowns gambler son after sinking RM300,000 into loan shark debts

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30, 2026, A father publicly severed ties with his son after enduring a decade of harassment from loan sharks triggered by gambling debts, highlighting the growing crisis of illegal moneylending.

At a press conference hosted by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department, department head Michael Chong revealed that 58-year-old Loi had bailed his son out more than eight times, spending RM300,000 to clear debts. The breaking point came when loan sharks threatened to burn down his house if payments were not made.

Another parent, Yeow, 51, shared her ordeal after her son accumulated RM183,750 in debt from 13 illegal lenders. She said loan sharks threatened to mutilate her son, burn her home, and even hacked her phone, using voice-cloning technology to impersonate her in attempts to locate the family. In one intimidation tactic, they padlocked a property she had sold years earlier.

Chong disclosed that his department has already received 300 reports of loan shark harassment this year, matching the total for 2025. He urged legal reforms to hold serial borrowers accountable, stressing that their reckless actions drag families into “nightmare situations.”
