Parents Question Effectiveness of Jalur Gemilang Badge for Unity

A group of parents has expressed doubts about the effectiveness of requiring students to wear the Jalur Gemilang badge on uniforms to promote unity. Mak Chee Kin, Chair of the Melaka Parents Action Group in Education (Magpie), called the initiative futile without instilling values of unity and tolerance from a young age.

He criticized political leaders for exploiting racial and religious issues, undermining harmony. Meanwhile, Anuar Ahmad of UKM’s Minda Institute supported the move but emphasized the need for broader efforts, such as teaching the Federal Constitution and Rukun Negara. He urged holistic patriotism programs across all school types.
