SINGAPORE, Aug 21 — A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 21 months in jail for stomping on his father’s chest and striking him multiple times with a remote control during a dispute over rental income.
According to The Straits Times, Teo Yao Zhong pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt in the 2023 incident, which left his then 72-year-old father with rib fractures and a scalp laceration. His father, now 75, had rented out a room to supplement his income, sparking Teo’s anger when he was not given a share.
Court documents revealed that Teo threw household items around the home before midnight on Jan. 19, 2023. When his father tried to intervene, Teo assaulted him with a remote control. The elderly man fell while trying to defend himself, at which point Teo stomped on his chest.

His father fled and called police, who found him injured and took him to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Officers later arrested Teo after he continued throwing items, including a large television, despite warnings.
The prosecution sought a stiff sentence, citing the father’s vulnerability due to age. Teo, unrepresented, admitted wrongdoing but claimed he could not recall the incident.
