It is Sanusi versus Ramkarpal now on teaching Muslims not to gamble

PETALING JAYA, Aug 25 — Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has responded sarcastically to DAP MP Ramkarpal Singh’s call for him to focus on discouraging Muslims from gambling rather than challenging the Federal Court’s ruling on gambling licences. Sanusi quipped that he could invite Ramkarpal to give a ceramah to Muslims on why they should not gamble, adding that Kedah’s efforts to ban gambling would not stop.

Speaking at a briefing organised by the Kedah Information Secretariat, Sanusi said, “Fine, we’ll invite him to give a talk later. Let DAP tell Muslims not to gamble.”

He stressed that the Federal Court’s Aug 12 decision rejecting Kedah’s appeal meant the issue now rests with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also finance minister. “So the ball is in the finance minister’s court,” he said, warning Kedah residents would be angry if gambling was approved.

PAS legal bureau chairman Wan Rohimi Wan Daud meanwhile revealed that similar legal challenges are being mounted against Perlis’ directive to shut down gambling premises. Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah has vowed to continue the state’s zero-gambling policy, following closures earlier this year.
