Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim clarified that his suggestion for Johor’s state election polling to be held on a Sunday was a personal view, not interference with the Election Commission (SPR).
SPR Independence: PM Respects Commission’s Authority
He explained that Sunday voting would ease participation for Malaysians working in Singapore, but emphasized SPR’s independence in setting dates. Responding in Parliament, Anwar stressed Malaysia’s principle of non‑interference, saying he would not consult Singapore’s Prime Minister on election matters.
While bilateral ties remain strong, he noted elections are strictly domestic affairs. Employers in Singapore, however, have been informed to facilitate Malaysian workers returning home to vote.
