New: Terengganu Defends Anti-LGBT Sign as Shariah Duty Amid Discrimination Claims

1 min read

KUALA TERENGGANU: Dr Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi, Chairman of the State Information, Da’wah, and Shariah Empowerment Committee, defended a controversial signboard near Universiti Malaysia Terengganu banning same-sex relationships, asserting it aligns with Islamic principles of amar makruf nahi mungkar. “It’s not about sowing hatred but educating society to avoid acts prohibited by Allah,” he said, citing Quranic and Sunnah evidence. Transgender activist Nisha Ayub condemned the sign as inciting hatred and institutional discrimination, potentially encouraging bullying and violence. Khalil maintained the prohibition reflects Terengganu’s shariah-based governance, not discrimination, but a reminder rooted in religious obligation.
