BANGKOK – Thai white rice prices surged 10% to US$423 a tonne in the week ending April 8, the sharpest rise since August 2023. Analysts say the increase reflects soaring fuel and fertiliser costs linked to the Iran war, alongside a prolonged dry season that has reduced yields.

Some farmers have suspended cultivation as profits no longer cover expenses. Rabobank’s Oscar Tjakra noted that a stronger baht, higher freight, and insurance costs also contributed to the spike. Thailand, the world’s third-largest rice exporter, faces mounting pressure as input costs remain elevated, threatening future output and global supply stability.
