Manpower Minister Tan See Leng has criticised proposals by Workers’ Party MPs Andre Low and Gerald Giam during a May 5 debate on Singapore’s AI transition. The motion, tabled by labour chief Ng Chee Meng, sought to ensure AI adoption without rising joblessness. Giam suggested a “national AI equity fund” paying annual dividends to citizens, while Low proposed redundancy insurance for workers displaced by AI. Tan argued both ideas “rest on a pessimistic premise” that Singaporeans lack agency, saying they amount to “settlement, not empowerment.”

He stressed Singapore’s tradition of investing in people, citing S$10 billion spent on workforce initiatives. Low and Giam rejected Tan’s assessment, insisting strong safety nets complement upskilling. Tan later said real income gains and the upcoming Skills and Workforce Development Agency will ensure workers share AI benefits.
