TikTok is under scrutiny in Malaysia after the communications regulator MCMC issued a statutory demand over alleged misuse of a fake account linked to King Sultan Ibrahim. Police confirmed a fresh investigation under the Sedition Act and Penal Code following circulation of defamatory content. Earlier, authorities said over 10,000 fake accounts misusing royal identities were removed between January and March.
TikTok trouble
MCMC criticized TikTok’s moderation response as unsatisfactory, demanding stronger systems and a formal explanation. The regulator stressed misuse of online platforms involving race, religion, and royalty undermines public order, harmony, and respect for constitutional institutions.
