SINGAPORE, Oct 8 — An Italian national who posed as a wealthy pilot on Tinder and deceived a Singaporean woman into sex work in Dubai has been sentenced to eight years’ jail and six strokes of the cane. Achraf Arjaouy, 32, was also fined S$9,000 (RM29,000) after being convicted under Singapore’s Prevention of Human Trafficking Act for recruiting the victim by deception for sexual exploitation, CNA reported.
The woman, aged 30 to 31 at the time, met Arjaouy in early 2021. He presented himself as a Qatar-based pilot and promised marriage after a whirlwind courtship.

In April 2021, he persuaded her to travel to Dubai, claiming she needed to raise US$10,000 as proof of funds before entering Qatar. Believing marriage depended on it, she reluctantly engaged in sex work, handing her earnings to Arjaouy daily.
She continued for months until contracting a sexually transmitted disease in September 2021, after which she stopped and returned to Singapore. Arjaouy was arrested in November 2023 over an unrelated offence. During trial, he denied trafficking, arguing her account was not credible. District Judge Eugene Teo rejected his claims, stressing appearance was irrelevant. Arjaouy also faces other cheating-related charges.
