SHAH ALAM – Tun Dr Hasmah Mohamad Ali celebrates her 99th birthday yesterday, just two days after her husband Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad marked his 100th. Born on July 12, 1926, in Klang, Selangor, Dr Hasmah was among the first Malay women to become a medical doctor, graduating from King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore. Renowned for her dedication to maternal and child health, family planning, and rural education, she notably reduced infant mortality in Kedah as its Maternal and Child Health Officer. Remembered as a compassionate public health pioneer and steadfast partner to Mahathir, her legacy continues to inspire Malaysians.
