A U.S. trade court has blocked former President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs, ruling he overstepped his authority by imposing sweeping duties on imports from countries with trade surpluses against the U.S.
U.S. Court Blocks Trump’s Tariffs, Says Only Congress Can Regulate Trade
The Court of International Trade stated that only Congress can regulate international commerce, and Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to justify the tariffs was improper.
Lawsuits were filed by small businesses and 13 states, citing economic harm. The Justice Department argued the plaintiffs had not yet been harmed. The decision may be appealed to higher courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
