US Demands Zero-Tariff Access in High-Stakes Thai Trade Talks

Thailand is in talks with the US to avert a 36% tariff on its exports, offering to cut import duties on 90% of US goods, including zero-tariff access for longan and tilapia. Finance Minister Pichai Chunahavajira also proposed regulatory changes to accommodate US-made left-hand drive vehicles and reduce non-tariff barriers.

The negotiations come amid rising pressure as the Aug 1 deadline set by US President Donald Trump approaches. Thai exports to the US surged 15% this year, but failure to reach a deal may cost the economy up to 1% of GDP. Talks also include sensitive geopolitical demands from the US.
