Malaysia Imposes Export Permit Rule for US AI Chips

Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) has mandated that all exports, transhipments, and transit of US-origin high-performance AI chips now require a Strategic Trade Permit under Section 12 of the Strategic Trade Act 2010.

This move aims to close regulatory gaps amid rising global concerns over chip diversion to restricted entities. Companies must report intended shipments 30 days in advance if misuse is suspected. Violations will face strict legal action. 

The policy aligns with Malaysia’s commitment to a secure, transparent trade environment and follows US plans to restrict advanced chip shipments to Malaysia to prevent re-exports to China.
