KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 – The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to trigger a surge in illegal betting activities, particularly through online platforms, according to Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department Director Datuk M Kumar. He said global tournaments often attract high interest from football fans, which syndicates exploit by offering fast, easy wagers via websites and messaging apps.

Police anticipate a sharp rise in illegal betting between June 12 and July 20, with data showing 90% of syndicates now operating digitally rather than through physical bookies. Kumar noted syndicates use electronic payments and cashless transactions, alongside promotions such as free credits and live match betting, to lure customers.
