TORONTO, June 6 – Canadian football fans’ excitement over hosting the men’s World Cup has collided with frustration at Fifa’s ticket pricing. Lawrence Yee, a lifelong supporter, said he was “ecstatic” when Toronto and Vancouver were named host cities, but now cannot afford to attend. The cheapest tickets for Canada’s opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 cost more than C$1,000, leaving hundreds of seats unsold less than two weeks before kickoff.

Hotels are only 80% full, despite Fifa president Gianni Infantino claiming demand was “10 times” higher than previous tournaments. Sports economist Moshe Lander argued Fifa prioritises revenue over filling stadiums, saying, “They can behave in whatever immoral, unethical way they want – unless fans walk away.” Fifa defended its variable pricing model, noting 1,000 tickets were offered at US$60, calling it competitive for a global event.
